Congrats to Beston-Gracie ISOHEALTH Adelaide - State Titles
[Article Posted: 1st Sep 2009]
Well done to Matt Jones and his crew for a phenominal performance at this years South Australian BJJ Championships.
Below is an article from Matt covering the highlights of the day.
On Sunday June 28th the Beston-Gracie ISOHEALTH Adelaide team rolled into ETSA Park stadium for the 2009 Federation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu South Australia (FBJJ-SA) State Championships! As one of the committee of the FBJJ-SA I’d been involved in the planning and setup of the event so I already knew how great the event was going to look, we had the new electronic scoreboards, a great mat area and the stands for the spectators provided a great area for fans, friends, teammates and family members to cheer on the competitors. The Beston-Gracie ISOHEALTH Adelaide team stepped up in a major way supplying a huge number of volunteers to make sure scoring and time keeping were covered and I am really thankful to our team members who did step up and volunteer for those rolls because without you the event would have struggled badly. Andrew T, Andrew C, Ash, Ben B, Dale, Israel, Matt N. Thanks guys, you really stepped up! We supplied more than 3 times our quota of event staff and yet you all still worked tirelessly throughout the day to help pick up for the teams that were short on volunteers. Truly AWESOME, you guys are a great example of what sport and martial arts should be all about!
The event was a huge success in it’s own right and it was extremely good day for the Beston-Gracie ISOHEALTH Adelaide team! Our team all represented themselves in a really good light with excellent sportsmanship even in the face of some situations where people may easily have shown frustration or anger our guys stayed cool and polite, but that’s the nature of the sport, things are going to happen in comps that stress you out but at the end of the day you want to know that you acted in a way that allows you to look yourself in the mirror and be proud of who you are.
Anyhow, as for the actual performance on the mat our team performed brilliantly, we came away with 11 Gold medals, 11 Silver medals and 10 Bronze medals! We also finished
We came 2nd overall in the teams event which is awesome at anytime but especially so given that we've only been going for two and a half years and we started completely from scratch. We’re all super happy with our results as they are proof positive that even though we don’t focus on competition we can still put in a very strong competition team (we like to spend time on the self defence side of BJJ but the sport side is also great fun). We had no juvenile competitors either so once we add some kids training to our timetable it will increase our chances of taking that number 1 spot on the Team Cup!
There were a bunch of great highlights from Beston-Gracie ISOHEALTH Adelaide team members throughout the day but here are a snapshot of some of them…
- Nick W was fighting up a weight class and sustained a broken nose in his opening match of the gi division, his nose was smashed and the claret flowed hard for a quite a while! Well anyhow, even with his nose smashed the awesome little dude still insisted on stepping up for the NoGi division and in his first round won by submission in just 13 seconds to achieve the fastest submission of the day!!! What a trooper!!!
- Mikey Lim our 58kg dual gold medalist in gi and NoGi stepped up for the Open Weight No-Gi event and met a MONSTER of a bloke in the first round, this guy was well over 100kg and ripped to the bone! I started a chant “Mikey, clap clap clap, Mikey, clap clap clap” and the whole crowd (even people from other teams) got behind him to spur him on against this bloke who was easily one of the most massive dudes of the day. Mikey didn’t manage to win that match but the gold’s he already took in his weight class would have softened that blow LOL!
- Crazy Lachy managed to go through the whole day fighting 3 divisions (gi weight, nogi weight and nogi open weight) without dropping a single point! Yes that’s right, he didn’t drop a point the whole day! He did end up having to forfeit his Open Weight match which left him with Bronze (he had to forfeit due to match scheduling clashing too tightly) but man what a great achievement! Lachy has only been training 12 months but you’d never know it from looking at his comp results!
- Dom won 4 Gold medals from 4 divisions so he can be very pleased with himself, what more can I say?
- We won medals in a huge range of divisions from the lightest of white belts to the heaviest of blue belts
Here are the actual medal results for our Beston-Gracie ISOHEALTH Adelaide team for the FBJJ-SA State Championships for 2009, I lost my voice by the end of the day but man it was well worth it!!!

GSA Royler Gracie Cup - Support for Prof. Marcelo Rezende
[Article Posted: 24th August 2009]
Message from GSA Head Instructor Prof. Bruno Panno:
Hi everyone, last Friday we, from Jiu Jitsu family, have experienced a terrible episode. Our college and my friend Marcelo Rezende had his gym in Brookvale criminally burnt out. Sadly the fire destroyed his whole mat area, walls, pictures and furniture, things that, how we know, take a lot of work to build.
I, as part of Jiu Jitsu community in Australia will open the 1st Royler Gracie Cup for all academies aiming to raise money to help Marcelo to rebuild his gym. I am really counting on your presence at this moment.

Prof. Royce speaks about Grandmaster Helio
[Article Posted: 3rd February 2009]

[Article Posted: From Prof. Royce Gracie, http://www.roycegracie.tv]
Friends,
Today my father, Helio, at the age of 95 passed on. I am honored to be the son of such a great man! He was an inspiration to me throughout my life. As a Grandmaster of Jiu-Jitsu and the father of "Vale Tudo" he brought Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to the forefront of martial arts. He was a man of small stature but his heart was that of a giant. He proved with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu that even a small man could overcome a bigger stronger opponent by using leverage and technique. He was truly an innovator. Just look around and you can see how his success gave birth to the sport of mixed martial arts that we all enjoy today.
Many of you may think that the greatest thing my father ever gave me was Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. But I want all of you to know that I will remember him most for what he taught me off the matt. He taught me how to be a man, a husband and a father. He showed me how to be honorable, respectful and diligent. He taught me how to be a whole person.
I ask that together we celebrate the remarkable life of my father, Helio Gracie. The greatest tribute you can to pay to my father is to continue to train and share Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, remembering to never lose sight of the fact that what you do off the matt counts more than what you do on the matt. Face life's challenges with confidence, dare to pursue your dreams and live to the fullest just as my father did.
God bless us all!
Royce

Grandmaster Helio Gracie Passes
Submitted by:Kid Peligro / Sr Editor
Posted on : 1/29/2009
It is with deep sadness that I have to announce that the Master of Masters, the founder of gracie Jiu-Jitsu Grandmaster Helio Gracie has passed. The Grandmaster is survived by his wife Vera, sons Rorion, Relson, Rickson, Rolker, Royler, Royce and Robin and daughters Rherika and Ricci his grandkids and the Gracie family and a family of disciples all practitioners of the art he loved.
At this time I am at a loss of words as words are not enough to describe the greatness of this man who not only developed a martial art but along with his family fought to spread the word of its efficiency to the 4 corners of the World. As a disciple, fan and someone who has had the priviledge of sharing the wisdom of the Grandmaster I can only say that we will all miss him dearly and he will live in spirit forever in all who practice and love this art.
A somber Royler put it perfectly: "He influenced all of us for the better, continues to affect and will continue to affect so many forever!"
I am sure that Grandmaster Helio Gracie is now sharing the big mat in the heavens!
We will miss you dearly!

ISR Returns to Australia
[Article Posted: 13th January 2009]
Please forward and questions or registrations to OzCombatives1@yahoo.com.au
Following the huge success of last Septembers ISR Matrix courses there will be a number of courses this March.
Brisbane 16-20 March combined PM 101 and PM 201 Workplace Trainer course
Adelaide 22-26 March combined PM 101 and LE 101 WT course
Perth 28 March - 01 April combined PM 101 and PM 201 WT course
The PM 101 is the first 3 days of the 5 day block and is open to anyone. 101 covers subject control via the helmet, dive, arm drag, underhook and pike, harness, wrist weave, s-position and team tactics. Testimonials are available from http://ozcombatives.com/reviews.html
The PM 201 component covers the last 3 days of the 5 day block and is only available to those that have completed a 101 course. 201 covers attached and unattached striking during the standup, clinch and ground phases of a confrontation and is fully intergrated with the 101 material. The 201 material has never before been offered in Australia.
The LE 101 program is a 5 day block and covers drawn and holstered weapons retention, vehicle extractions and many more LE specific applications and is available to approved applicants only - generally serving LE/MIL/ Govt security only. Last years LE program had enrolment from 4 different Police agencies and 3 other Government departments.
The course instructor is ISR Matrix Vice President Fletch Fuller. Fletch has been with ISR since day 1 and also runs a Straight Blast Gym affiliated BJJ school in Florida. Fletch is a full-time Police tactics trainer for a large department.
Course tuition is a bargain at $200 per day. 10% discount applies to Police, Corrections, Defence, Emergency Services, Health Services, Security and those that participated in the 2008 courses. Group discounts are available upon request.
Most course positions are already spoken for and the class size is restricted to ensure good instructor/student ratios, so it's best to get in NOW to guarantee a position.
Contact OzCombatives1@yahoo.com.au ASAP for further details.
